Rock Road

A backland opportunity at Rock Road turns part of an oversized, overgrown garden in the Hertfordshire market town of Royston into a new secluded family home which references the local character of the area.

Rather than introducing an unrelated modern form, the design takes its cues from the host house. Pale textured brick echoes the street’s gault brickwork. A projecting central entrance bay and symmetrical windows reflect its formal frontage, and a simple gabled roof gives a modern version of its form.

The long garden plot is about twice the width of its neighbours leaving room for a second backland home without crowding the street. Accessed by a new drive alongside the original house, the three-bedroom home sits in the middle of the garden, set well back from the neighbouring boundaries, the road and is screened by two mature trees which are kept within the proposal.
